Kristian Bush

Singer / Songwriter / Producer

Kristian Bush is country music's renaissance man. Adept at thriving on the genre’s

fringes and delivering songs that speak to its contemporary heartbeat, Kristian

continues to build his prolific and enviable career by stretching the norms, embracing

creative freedom and never giving up.

A shape-shifting king of reinvention in the music industry, Kristian founded two wildly

successful duos in different genres – Sugarland and Billy Pilgrim. He launched his solo

career and started the improvisational rock band Dark Water. Kristian jumped into the

world of lo-fi chill music with Cabin Chill. In the last two years, his producing career

exploded as he discovered and produces Megan Moroney along with Runaway June

and more. He’s also an in-demand songwriter. “Creating things where there was nothing before is a genuine thrill,” Kristian said. “I learned that thrill as a kid and have maneuvered and chased until I could continue that feeling as an adult. You never quit trying. Always keep one project that feels like the beginning of the dream.”

Kristian is a multi-platinum-selling, two-time GRAMMY® Award winner most known for

co-founding the record-breaking Country duo Sugarland with Jennifer Nettles. In 2024,

he celebrated the 20th anniversary of Sugarland with a co-headlining arena tour

alongside Little Big Town and marked the 34th year of his folk-rock duo Billy Pilgrim,

which recently made its Grand Ole Opry debut. He even doubled up in 2024, often

playing with both duos in the same area. “I love that people are still putting the clues together all these years later that the guy from Sugarland is one of the guys from Billy Pilgrim,” Kristian said.

Sugarland was decorated by the Recording Academy, the Country Music Association,

the Academy of Country Music, and more for hit songs, including “Stay,” “Baby Girl,”

“Stuck Like Glue,” and “Life In a Northern Town.” Ahead of its time, the duo is unafraid

to fracture genre norms, unflinching in its dedication to art, equality, creative freedom,

and the pursuit of happiness. “Sugarland has this beautiful ability to deliver every time you turn on your favorite song, ”Kristian said. “It gives you what you’re asking for every time, and it is a very specific sculpture of melodies and rhythms that we put together to do that.”

Billy Pilgrim, comprised of Kristian and Andrew Hyra, met in 1990 at a songwriters night

in Knoxville, Tennessee. The duo recorded and released five albums in 11 years. Billy

Pilgrim notched hit songs, including Sweet Louisiana Sound and Insomniac a

cultural phenomenon with such legs it was profiled in the New York Times 29 years after

its release. In 2024, the men were emboldened by a rejuvenated dedication to

storytelling, artful harmonies and an understanding that the duo – just like its members

– is creatively weightier and more diverse than contemporary labels.

The same is true for Dark Water. Kristian, his brother Brandon Bush, and their friend

Benji Shanks formed the improvisational rock band in 2020. The group will share new

songs regularly in 2025, leading up to its sophomore album, One Step Ahead of the

Robot, which arrives in the fall. “The whole idea of Dark Water it is a novel that you can read over and over and over again,” Kristian said. “Whereas something like Sugarland is an incredibly bestselling novel that you read once. Dark Water is the thing you keep picking back up and keep

putting it back on, and you're like, ‘Why can I not stop?’” Kristian, Brandon and Benji also collaborate for their lo-fi chill music project Cabin Chill, which will also release new music throughout 2025.

The men are also the sonic backbone of Megan Moroney’s albums. While Kristian

produces Moroney, Brandon and Benji comprise the studio band on her albums.

Producing challenges Kristian to filter his more than two decades of experience in

writing and recording successful albums into a distinct lens through which he can sculpt

other artists’ careers. “I've had to guide my own music through the maze of, ‘How can I get the most

commercial version of this song and it still be me?’” Kristian said. “Because I had to do

that for myself over and over again, I feel comfortable in the challenge of helping other

people find it.” Megan was Kristian’s intern at his Atlanta, Georgia, recording studio when he

discovered her talent. The Country Music Association named Megan New Artist of the Year in 2024, and Rolling Stone named her sophomore album Am I Okay? one of the

best albums of 2024.

“We are in the commercial music business,” Kristian said. “If you want to just make a

record that makes you feel good, you can do that at your house. You don't have to

spend any money, and you don't need to hire me. But if you want to make something for

millions and millions of people that you've never met, I want to be a part of that.”

At the same time, Kristian is also constantly writing and recording songs for his next

solo project – a gulf and western collection that dives off 2023’s beach music EP Drink

Happy Thoughts. He’s particularly inspired by his upcoming single, “Beach in

Tennessee.” While it isn’t about a beach, Kristian wrote the beach mountain romance

with hit country songwriter Tim Nichols. He describes the song as “so country in

structure” and said it is steeped in his growing knowledge of the genre. “Queen of the

Keys,” which he wrote with his son, Tucker Bush, and Billy Pilgrim bandmate Andrew

Hyra, is completely different. “There's an incredible amount of joy that comes as I'm trying to put together this new set of beach music,” Kristian said. “I can see all the reggae coming in. I can see all the storied folk style coming in. There's even the funky sort of gulf-and-western New

Orleans-inspired stuff that sounds like Dark Water.” Kristian is sure people see him as “constantly experimenting.” And while that might be true, more than two decades into his career, what he’s really doing is finding joy in the challenge of his ever-expanding creative space.
