Steve Ray Ladson

USA

Steve Ray Ladson, a multi-talented musician and songwriter from Hopkins, South Carolina, has emerged as one of the most compelling voices in Country music. Rising to national prominence following his standout performance on America's Got Talent in July 2025, Ladson captivated audiences and judges alike with his original composition "Back of My Truck," earning unanimous approval from all four judges and advancing to the next round.

The performance drew enthusiastic praise from the judging panel, with Sofia Vergara declaring him her favorite music act of the season, exclaiming "You guys were amazing, I loved it!" Simon Cowell was equally impressed, stating "Everything was, like, on point. I love the song, I love you. I love the band." Both Simon and Howie Mandel recognized the commercial potential of the song, agreeing it had all the makings of a hit.

Ladson's musical journey began in his teenage years performing in Gospel quartets, where he developed his foundational skills and stage presence. His talent and dedication soon led to opportunities with nationally recognized acts, including tours with Grammy nominee Robert Randolph and the Family Band and six time Grammy winners The Blind Boys of Alabama. These experiences exposed him to diverse musical traditions and helped shape his unique artistic vision.

A true multi-instrumentalist, Ladson has mastered an impressive array of ten instruments, including guitar, electric bass, banjo, keyboards, drum kit, and harmonica. This versatility allows him to create rich, layered compositions and brings a distinctive depth to his live performances. His instrumental prowess is matched by his songwriting abilities, with all of his material being original compositions drawn from his real-life experiences.

Ladson's songwriting draws inspiration from blues and roots legends such as Robert Johnson and Sonny Boy Williamson, while incorporating elements from his Southern upbringing. His music reflects his life in the South, where riding trails with the “Chocolate Cowboys" and participating in rodeo and horse riding culture provide dominant themes for his creative endeavors.

"Blackgrass Brothercana" - A New Genre

Perhaps most notably, Ladson is pioneering his own musical genre, which he calls "Blackgrass Brothercana." This innovative fusion combines bluegrass and country-Americana with elements of R&B, hip hop, rock, and soul, creating a sound that is both rooted in tradition and refreshingly contemporary. This genre-blending approach reflects his diverse musical background and his commitment to pushing creative boundaries.
